FIRM MARKETS
BUYERS ACTIVE
FAIR BUSINESS
Evening Post, February 15,
Fair business was registered on the Stock Exchange during the week,. There was no spectacular movement in prices, the majority of sound shares holding their own on last week's quotations. Consistent inquirers came forward for War Loan, with sellers ttolding out for higher figures than last week. Sales were made at slightlyadvanced rates. Government Stocks showed a tendency to harden, and buyers were frequently on the market ready to pay a little more than last week's closing figure. The sales reflected a better tone in this section.
Banks and insurance .were generally ' steady, with more buyers than sellers coming forward and moderate business only going through. ' Good New Zealand industrials held their place on the market, and the week closed at levels largely similar to those of the previous week, though one or two leaders showed, an advancing tendency. " Australian shares showed little change, with a moderate volume of business compared with recent activities. Australian shares showed signs of falling as the week closed, this trend being doubtless a reflection of the depression of the Australian Exchanges following the Commonwealth Government's statement on the gravity of the international situation. The statement came too late in the week, however, to produce any appreciable effect upon the New Zealand market, and the local exchanges certainly did not react so sensitively as Sydney operators. Prices generally for Australian' holdings were little changed, but with a downward trend.
