"RANGITANE BALL"
RAIDER VICTIMS IN SYDNEY
Sydney recently capitalised the rescue of raider victims by giving a "Rangitane Ball" in aid of King George's Fund for Sailors. At least one of the famous beards grown by survivors of the German sinkings is still extant, for its possessor was one of the guests of honour. Captain Lionel Upton, of the Rangitane, was among those present.
Survivors from the crews of ships sunk by the raiders were entertained at the ball, and were almost the only men present not in evening dress or uniform. They wore lapel-badges showing from which vessel they came.
Women survivors were the guests of honour of the Overseas League on another occasion. Miss Margaret Osborne, one of the survivors, and a former escort of evacuees, who has an arm still in a sling, is planning to return to England by the first available ship. "An escorted one, for preference," she said, laughing. "But as I have already lost two lots of luggage, I suppose a third time would not matter."
All the survivors woke of the kindness shown to them in Sydney. "In addition to necessities, people' have given us extras, such as swim suits, so that we have not wanted for anything," said one.
