HOW WOMEN CAN HELP

MISS EVELYN GARDINER'S APPEAL

TRAVEL CLUB RECEPTION

"We women should strive to encourage our men to go forward and to work and care for them when they go," said Miss Evelyn Gardiner, of the Gilbert and Sullivan Comic Opera Company when speaking at the reception given to principals of the company by the Wellington Travel Club yesterday afternoon. "We women should do everything possible to help maintain things at home, for a man fights all the better when he knows his home is safe.

"We don't know what is in front of us," she said. "We .don't know what that little gentleman in the East is going to do. We can't look to England to do more but must rely upon ourselves. It is the women who can speak and act and help to bring about the victory." :■

The reception was held in the D.I.C. tearooms, and those who made speeches had a very large audience of club members. The hostesses were Mesdames J. I. Goldsmith, D. Rodie, Len McKay, O. K. Tennant, C. W. Clark, Miss Amy Kane, and Miss N. E. Donovan (secretary). Mr. R. H. Nimmo was chairman.

Other members of. the J. C. Williamson Company present were Mr. Ivan Menzies, Miss Sara Gregory, Mr. Bernard .Manning, Mr. Gregory Stroud, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Watson, Mr. Maxwell Oldaker, Miss Peggy Shea, and Miss Viola Wilson.

There were also a number of other special guests, these including Mr. and Mrsr John Farrell, Mrs. C. Alston (South Africa), Mrs. J. S. Kelly (Canterbury). Mrs. Roberts. Mrs. Connolly, Miss Henley. Mrs. Culford Bell, Mrs. R. Taylor. Miss Elsie K. Morton and Miss Pearl Fisher (Auckland), Mrs. Max Willis (Oamaru), Mrs. Hamilton (Bluff). Miss Marion Crow and Miss Joy Wray (Dunedin), Miss Hayes (Whangarei), Mr. J. Annand-Smith (chairman of the Victory Queen Carnival Committee), Mrs. Ben Fuller ("Movie" Queen), Miss Patricia Luckie ("Commerce" Queen), and Sergeant Sutherland, R.N.Z.A.F.

With so many speeches (each member of the theatrical company gave a short address) there was little time for other entertainment, but a short and delightful musical interlude was provided by Mrs. James Marshall, who sang, accompanied at the piano by Miss Greenwood.
