COPPER SHORTAGE

SERIOUS IN GERMANY

LONDON, February 4.

The "Daily Telegraph" says Germany is facing a serious shortage of copper and is increasingly using aluminium as a substitute. The Germans, therefore, are increasing imports from France of bauxite, the main component of aluminium.

There is apparently no copper in Europe for exportation to Germany except from Spain. Railing from Spain would be difficult and costly, and nations outside Europe have a lien on Spanish copper, which forms foreign exchange for much-needed wheat.

The conversion of bauxite requires, complicated machinery. The new calls on aluminium will also affect aircraft production.
