CHURCH IN NORWAY
DOUBTS ABOUT GERMAN PROMISES
LONDON, February 4,
The Stockholm representative of "The Times" says that seven bishops of Norway have sent a joint letter to Herr Stancke, the Quislingist Minister for Church and Education, asking whether the State acknowledges itself bound by the law of morality contained in the Bible, and also by the Confession on which the Church's faith is based.
Since last April the bishops have frequently instructed the clergy and congregations to respect the law, under the belief that they would enjoy full religious freedom according to Hitler's order and also under the promise of the Nazi Governor, Herr Terboven, that the Courts of Justice would remain independent. The bishops now state that serious doubts have arisen recently as to whether their instructions to the clergy and congregations are still justified, and they therefore ask for a clear statement on the issue.
