PREMISES RAIDED

JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES

ACTION IN AUSTRALIA

(Received January 18, 1 p.m.)

SYDNEY, This Day

After the organisations of Jehovah's Witnesses had been declared unlawful in a special Gazette issued about eighteen hours after the announcement of the ban, Federal and State police raided premises in a number of places in the Commonwealth. They seized quantities of literature and equipment. Police and military experts are severely criticised for the decision to announce the ban before the issue of the Gazette which enabled the seizure of papers and equipment to be made. During the raids a Brisbane constable was struck with an axe and four other policemen were assaulted.
