SUCCESSFULLY MET
THE FIRE MENACE
OUTBREAKS SOON SNUFFED
(British Official Wireless.)
(Received January 18, 9.20 a.m.)
RUGBY, January 17.
The value of the fire-watching system to deal with the latest form of Nazi air attack on Britain is emphasised by the Ministry of Home Security and was amply demonstrated last night when thousands of incendiaries are reported to have been dropped during a prolonged attack on a town on the south.coast. Up to a hundred fires were started, but in only one instance was it necessary to keep the fire services on the spot for any time. In all other cases where fires were started they were promptly smothered by firewatchers, wardens, Home Guards, and householders.
A fire officer said that sixty fires were put out in less than ten minutes. Considering the extent of the raid the damage is stated to be negligible and no casualties have been reported. Sandbags were distributed by the corporation to every householder and shopkeeper, and undoubtedly helped to save the town from very extensive damage.
