BOWLING
PROGRESS OF FOURS
TWENTY-TWO LEFT IN
KELBURN'S GOOD DAY
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, January 17.
Perfect and almost windless weather prevailed for the post-section play today !in the New Zealand fours bowling championship. At the.end of the day 22 fours remained, six being two-lifers and the others one-lifters. The day was one of surprises. Maslin (Hawera) outplayed .H. Wilson (Linwood), 22-10, and then went down to Mitchell (Blenheim), 20-19. Burgess .(Woolston) took Carswell's (Taieri) first life, and in the next game the Dunedin veteran went down to Higginbotham .(Ponsonby), 24-15. On the Elmwood green E. R. Moss (Karori) lost a life to R. E. McNish (Canterbury), 20-19, and his second to W. Gilbert (Karori). Spearman (R.S.A., Christchurch) was another to be eliminated, going down to Bell (Tauranga), 22-13, and Turpin (Canterbury), 22-21. Veitch (Dunedin) was beaten by Bremner (Auckland), 27-20, and R. E. McNish (Canterbury), 19-12. The first thrill of the day was the defeat of the crack Canterbury skip, R. Haworth, by the Balmacewen skip, T. Ferguson, 27-5. This was made the more interesting by Haworth having gone through the section play undefeated. He had a close shave 'in. his second game when Kyle (Karoro) ran him to 20-17. J. S. Martin (Auckland), who is skipping a rink of brothers and playing in United's colours, lost a life, 24-17, to J. R. Smith (Kelburn) in the last round of the, day. ST. ALBAN'S ATRACTION. The last of the two-life game's on the St. Albans green attracted a crowd Munn (Canterbury) met Giles (United) who had just taken the first life of O'Neill.. (Runanga, West Coast). Munn gained a 9-1 lead before the United ■men got going. Then the score went to 12-10 and this proved the turning point of the game. United drew six shots on the Canterbury men and Munn drove at the head and missed. Giles drew to block and Munn went wide .with his drive, but hit a single outside bowl which came in and wrecked ■ the head. United got only a single on the next head. Bowl after bowl drew to kitty, and Canterbury were lying shot when the skips changed over. Giles drew inside the shot bowl about three inches from kitty, and Munn missed with his draw. Taking the other hand, Giles drew a toucher, disturbing the head a few inches to give him three. Munn drove, and instead of the head scattering, his bowl pushed kitty through and followed it to the ditch, where two more of his bowls counted. ••• Now that the field has been narrowed down, good games should be I seen. on the three greens tomorrow. Several teams who met as two-lifers meet again as one-lifers. This is unavoidable under the automatic draw in which the championships are run. The six two-lifers play at St. Albans and the. one-lifers at Barrington and' Elmwood. .'•""• • The tw,enty-two-leftin.-are:— Two-lifers.-T-P. Munn (Canterbury), J. R. Smith (Kelburn), W. Bremner (Auckland), A. S. McDougall (Caversham), L. W. Besley (New Brighton), T. F. Mitchell (Blenheim). One-lifers.—H. Wilson (Linwood), H. S Maslin (Hawera), W. O'Neill (Runanga), J. M. In the semi-final, of the singles, which was played on the St. Albans green, J. R. Smith (Elmwood) beat C. H. Kettle XNelson), 19-16, after a fine exhibition of drawing by both men. In the early stages Kettle led from Smith, but the latter, who has retained his fine touch, just shaded the Nelson man. The game was watched by a crowd of 1500. „ i Smith now meets C Spearman R.S.A., Christchurch). at St. Albans. as soon as the latter is free from fours engagements.
