NEWTOWN SUB-AREA
A meeting of residents of the Newtown sub-area was held last night at St. Thomas's Hall. A number of ladies and young men from 16 to 18 years of age were present.
The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop) emphasised the urgent need not only for the military side of the Home Gu;ard, but also the civil side. '
Councillor R. W. McKeen, M.P., pointed out that the many difficulties which had been encountered at the inception of the scheme had been cleared away and misunderstandings about the functions of the Home Guard had been finally laid to rest.
Lieut.-Colonel A. Cowles spoke of the excellent progress that had been made since mid-December. He stated that enrolments were coming in freely, and up to the end of last week over 3400 members had enrolled in the Home Guard and the Civil Guard.
After the meeting a number of men joined up and seven offered their services as instructors.
