ATTACHED TO THE ARMY

The appointment has been gazetted of Dr. E. Marsden, C.8.E., M.C., as scientific adviser to the New Zealand Fighting Forces. He is attached to Army Headquarters, Wellington, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel.

. Lieutenant-Colonel Marsden is Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, an appointment he received when the Department was established in 1928. He was born and educated in England, and came to New Zealand first in 1914 as professor of physics at Victoria University College.

From January, 1916, until May, 1919, Lieutenant-Colonel Marsden served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in France, where he held the rank of major in the engineering division of the Fourth Army. He was twice mentioned in dispatches and was awarded the Military Cross. After his return to New Zealand he was appointed assistant director of education, holding this post vmtil his appointment to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
