CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
With the greens freshened after yesterday's rain, play -started this morning in" the fours at the New Zealand bowling championships. Sectional games will continue until Thursday, with two games on each day. There is an entry of 184, or , 736 players, compared with 136 at the championships in Chjfistchurch in 1936, and 172 at Wellington last year. Among notable players taking part are R. Haworth, who has twice previously skipped a Canterbury four to victory, H. Wilson (Linwood), who ..kipped the 1938 champions and the 1934 champions, and the Onehunga four, skipped by F. Livingstone, which took the title last year. Post-sectional play will start on Friday, and the games will be on the two-life principle. The Sydenham four, skipped by L. Dewar, secured one of the big wins scored in the first game, beating Beckenham (F. J. Dann), 36-15. Dunedin (W. Anderson) accounted for W. Sprosen's Linwood four by 37 points to 13, and the Canterbury four, under R. Haworth, were 38-12 against Auckland (W. Ure). Shirley (F. C. H. Williams) beat Port Ahuriri (E. C. Pirie), 38-13, and A. S. McDougall's Caversham four beat Ryan's Rangiora rink by 31 to 7. The Onehunga men, skipped by Livingstone, had a clear win from Westport (A. J. Green), and another champion to have success was H. Hilson, whose Linwood four beat Khandallah (T. Lock), 25-20. Phil Munn's Canterbury four also won comfortably.
