NOT A SURVIVOR

FILM PRODUCER'S DEATH

CITY OF BENARES TRAGEDY

The "Manchester Guardian" pays tribute to Ruby Grierson, a notable film producer, who was among those who did not survive the sinking of the City of Benares. She was accompanying the British children to Canada and sailed with camera, film, and complete photographic gear in order to record the trip.

A few years ago Miss Grierson joined in London the gifted group of film producers, comprising her brother John Grierson, Rotha, Elton, Basil Wright, John Taylor, and others, who created the great British documentary film. She was passionately eager about film work, and had a sensitive approach to ordinary people which, made-the films on which she worked the fine human documents that they are. She understood poor people and their troubles. She worked with Elton on "Housing Problems," on "Today We Live"—a documentary on the South Wales depressed areas —and produced under her own name "Cargo for Androssan."

Her last films were made for the Ministry of Food. In these, with her human approach, she never lost sight of the housewife and her children for whose benefit the films had been made.
