GORSE IN THE GORGE
POTENTIAL FIRE RISK
The superintendent of the Wellington Fire Brigade (Mr. C. A. Woolley) yesterday drew the attention of the Fire Board to the danger from fire existing in the Ngahauranga Gorge through the overgrowth of gorse and scrub in the vicinity of the Wellington City Council abattoirs. A fire had occurred there recently and the services of the brigade had to be called upon, he said.
"A carelessly-dropped match or cigarette end. especially during the summer months, could start a fire that
would spread with amazing rapidity and seriously endanger "the City Council's property," said Mr. Woolley. A fire once established in any of ths abattoir buildings would have a strong hold by the time the fire engines from the city arrived. Consequently it would be in the City Council's own interests to have "this ever-increasing menace removed forthwith." Mr. M. F. Luckie said that the elimination of.gorse in that neighbourhood was something of which they would have to take notice. Mr, Woolley said he had already written to the Town Clerk. The recent call to the fire in the gorge being out of the board's district, a charge of £7 14s was made for thej services of the brigade.
