Sir Harry Batterbee, High -Commissioner for the United Kingdom, and Lady Batterbee will return to Wellington this evening. . I Mr. Gordon Fraser, New Plymouth, president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, is visiting Wellington for a few days, and is staying at the Hotel. Waterloo. Major J.. Abel left last night for Hamilton and Auckland on business connected with the all-purposes patriotic appeal, of which he is the honorary Dominion organiser. Dr. James Lyon, Mus.D,, Oxon., has been appointed Trinity College exa/iiiner for the South Island of New Zealand for 1941. Mr. B. J. Burton, postmaster at and Mrs. Burton, have arI rived in Auckland on- holiday. Mr. C. J. L. White has been appointed solicitor for the Automobile Association (Otago) in connection with the free legal aid and advice to members scheme. A message of congratulation from the King and Queen on attaining his hundredth birthday, has been received by Mr. Thornhill Cooper, of Papanui. Other congratulatory messages were received from the Governor-General (Lord Galway) and Lady Galway, and from Ministers of the Crown. Mr. J. S. McGrath, who for many years has been on the staff of the Southland Boys' High School, and is held in high esteem by old boys in all parts of the Dominion, is to retire at the end of the school year. Arrangements are being made by the Old Boys' Association in Invercargill to organise a suitable function to bid farewell to him and to make a presentation in appreciation of his services.

Messrs. H. Holderness and H. W. Harris have been elected, subject to their consent, directors of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand.

A call to the Rev. D. D. MacLachlan, of Ashburton South, has been extended by the congregation of St. David's Presbyterian Church,- Christchurch. Born in Scotland and educated at Glasgow, Mr. MacLachlan served as a radio operator in the Mercantile Marine during the Great War. After coming to New Zealand in 1922 he continued his education at Otago University and Knox Theological Hall. He has been Moderator of the Ashburton Presbytery on two occasions, and for the past three years has been convener of the youth committee.
