The master of the cargo ship Sussex, which was attacked and damaged by an enemy aircraft while on her way to Britain and which reached port safely, was Captain P. B. Clarke. The 18----year-old gunner, who was badly wounded when engaging the enemy plane and who refused to leave nis post, was named Croxford.

Captain Clarke was one of the wellknown masters in the service of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd. He served in the Royal Navy during the last war, and gained the Distinguished Service Cross at Zeebrugge in 1918. In the memorable night raid on the Belgian harbour he served in a motor-launch which was the last to leave the harbour under heavy fire, after ascertaining that all the crews of the three block-ships were taken off.
