COST OF LIVING

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —The result of the election at Waipawa is clearly a vote of no confidence in the policy of the Labour Government. Of every five voters three registered their votes against the Government. Labour got into power on promises; one was to reduce the cost of living, but actually this Government for its grandiose schemes has issued money out of all proportion to the goods and services available, so that almost everything is scarce and dear. That is why tomatoes fetch 2s 6d a pound and pineapples worth 20s fetch 60s a case. Milk is an absolute necessity in every home; we pay 7d a quart for it. Honey, another good food, was 6d to Bd, now we pay twice that. Our cheese, after hazardous and costly transport to London, sells there for 65s per cwt, roughly 7d a pound; we pay double that. Eggs for winter use were put down at Is in the past, now we pay. Is 9d. We used to get ten rides on our shilling tram ticket, now eight, with an application to make it seven. Apples go bad and . are dumped whilst we pay 6d a pound. Shoe repairs, recently raised by Government action to 9s (gent's soling and heeling), are surely at a record price. But here is the climax of Government control: the recent application of a man for a licence for himself to make shoes for sale in his own shop. Is it any wonder the electors are showing disapproval of such legislation?—l am, etc.,

PENSIONER.
