NAVAL RATINGS FROM N.Z.
(By Air Mail—From "The Post's" London Representative.)
LONDON, October 4.
A draft of New Zealand naval men arriving at an English port recently after an "uneventful voyage," received their baptism of fire during the first night they were moored in the port. Throughout the hours of darkness German raiders were overhead. Next morning the New Zealanders found an excellent collection of shrapnel on the decks.
Later in the day, they were welcomed to Britain by Mr. W. J. Jordan, the High Commissioner. New Zealand ratings who came to Britain with a contingent of New Zealand troops have since seen service round the British coast and one A.8., R. E. Berry (Auckland) has been as far as Iceland in a patrolling destroyer. He also saw something of an action off the French coast recently described in an Admiralty communique.
At the annual reunion on Saturday night of Great War members of the Wellington Regiment it was decided to cable best wishes to the three new battalions of the regiment serving overseas in the present war.
