BUTTER RATION

SEASON OF SCARCITY

LIMIT TWO OUNCES A HEAD

(By Air Mail—From "The Post's" London Representative.) LONDON, September 26. The butter ration in Britain has now been reduced to two ounces per person. It is explained by the Ministry of Food that this is to conserve stocks during a season of limited arrivals. The following statement was issued by the Ministry:

At this season of the year arrivals of butter from Australia and New Zealand are always at their lowest, rising progressively from November with the advance of the summer months in the Southern Hemisphere. Normally this seasonal decline in Dominion supplies is made good by import*, of butter from other sourbes which are not now available.

The Minister of Food has accordingly decided, as a precautionary measure, to conserve stocks by restricting to 2oz per head, during the season of limited arrivals, the amount of butter which may be obtained under the combined butter and margarine ration. An order to this effect will come into force on September 30.

The present fat ration of 802 a head consists of 6oz on the combined butter and margarine coupon and 2oz on the cooking fats coupon. This Boz ration will not be affected, since if 2ozs are taken in butter the remaining 6oz can be taken either in margarine or in 4oz of margarine and 2oz of cooking fat. Alternately, the whole Boz ration can be taken out in margarine. The allowance of butter for catering establishments will be fixed at 1.120z per person per meal served out of the total butter and margarine allowance of ioz.
