The feature of the Hutt v. University match was the opening partnership of 252 by Gwilliam and McLeod for Hutt. The runs were made at a good pace throughout by eound cricket. A declaration was made at 5.30 p.m., and University fared badly in reply, Buchan bowling very effectively; McLeod was in his best batting form and Gwilliam demonstrated again that he is developing along right lines. Bright and chanceless batting by C. McCarthy, -who scored 97 (twelve 4's and a 6), «vas the mainstay of Institute at the Basin Reserve, and when Wellington went to the crease ' late in the day they, had the long journey of 284 ahead of them. Bilby (39) and Crook (32) were the only others to pass 30 for Institute. Rabone's four wickets for 85 was good going for a slow bowler. Wellington started carefully, but at stumps had scored only 98 for four wickets.
I A stand by Buss and a fast-scoring lastwicket partnership between Eaton and Allen saved Kilbirnie from a very moderate showing against Midland. This time Kilbirnie did not have Rice's services, and Fortune had disposed of the opening batsmen when only 19 runs had been scored. Randall later, achieved marked success with the ball, and, though the fielding could have been improved, Kilbirnie were out for Just under 200. Steady batting' by Hepburn, Osborn, and Crawford put,Midlaid on the right way to establishing a .strong position, Crawford scoring freely towjards the close of play.
[ A .Improving- upon their previous promising display, Karori placed Wellington College Old Boys in a most difficult»position. Whereas Karori lost their sixth wicket at 202, Old Boys had only 95 runs on the board at a similar stage of their innings. A splendid batting effort by Standidge for Karori was well supported by Dickinson and Mullari, with Commons (from East Christchurch) also shaping well. Boyes and Whyte collected wickets cheaply in the latter part of the innings, but Coupland and Dickinson were equally effective In disposing of the early Old Boys batsmen, who would be required in the representative match next Saturday. Old Boys were 93 runs short ;on the first innings with three wickets, in hand at stumps. •
