CRICKET

BIG PARTNERSHIP

OPENERS MAKE CENTURIES

M CLEOD ■■& GWILLIAM

A magnificent start was given Hutt in entering upon the third series of Wellington senior cricket championship matches on Saturday afternoon, and there were also other turns of fortune in that the two leading teams,: Wellington College Old Boys and Kilbirnie, were in precarious positions at the end of the day's play. McLeod opened with Gwilliam for Hutt against University, and a great batting display carried the score to over 250; before the partnership was broken.. Both batsmen topped the century mark, and McLeod, was still, undefeated when the inning was . ■ declared closed,- after which there was some devastating! bowling. ■••..■ Jfrom their two eagy outright wins Wellington College Old Boys found | Karori a tough proposition. Standidge and others gave Karori a fairly solid score, but it was largely the' effectiveness of the Karori bowling which placed Old Boys in an unpromising position. Old - Boys still, had a long way to go with only three wickets in hand - and with the prospect of being three men short next Saturday. Kilmrme,-too, were up against it, Midland having the better of the day with last year's champions. A splendid batting effort by McCarthy (who just, missed a century) put Institute in a promising position against Wellington. All round, it was an- eventful afternoon s play in the senior grade.
