NEW INCINERATOR
BUILT AT MARANUI
TO BURN TRADE WASTE
One of the nuisances of refuse disposal has been the destruction of the tons of paper waste that are handed to the depots each day. It.is bad stuff to bury in the Bradford tips, and as the city destructor is partly closed ! down most of this trade paper refuse has been burned in netting enclosures, an unsatisfactory ash and scrap blowing business. From next week this refuse will be taken to the' Maranui depot, where an incinerator designed for this one job has been built. The reception bin will swallow a full lorry load at once and the paper will fall from the bin direct to a drying hearth and down again by its own weight to the fire chamber. Forced draught will make short work of dried paper and the ash will drop to a holding bin to be carted away. Heat from the furnace may be used later to dry metal and sand for the paving plant or to generate steam. It reads like a lot of trouble and expense to burn a bit of paper, but| this waste runs into thousands of tons a year, for every day of the week a: minimum of a hundred tons of paper is | thrown out from shops, offices, and fac- I tories in Wellington City. The New Zealand total must be really hand-1 some, for the appeal to make one sheet of paper go as far as two has not sunk ) in far as yet.
