OBITUARY
CAPTAIN H. MONRO

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
The death has occurred of Captain Hugh Monro, chairman of directors of the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company, at the age of 78. Captain Monro first went to sea in the famous barque Lurline and got his first command at the age of 22 in the brig Rio Loge, which was running cargoes from New Zealand1 to. South Africa and Mauritius, returning with sugar. In 1889 with the late Mr. A. H. Turnbull, he began to accumulate a small fleet. Captain Monro commanded such well-known vessels as the. Manurewa, Kinclure, Timaru, Rona, and Durlow, and sailed to America and the Baltic. With Mr. Turnbull he formed the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company in 1900, and bought steamers for the coastal trade. He sold the last sailing ship Rona in 1911. Captain Monro was chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board from 1931 to 1935.
