NEW ZEALAND BLOOD

;.^THE;:^J.G.:; DERBY

PANDECT'S DAM.BRED HERE

'< Although he had,.;ruled one of the favourites ,fbr>the; A.JiC, Derby .since' the1 autumn> Pandect Was actually *njciying only'his -second' Win when' fee" sprinted home best in last Saturday's ■*la.ssic at Randwick. Ne\v Zealand's h|>pe in the race^- Tidal .Weve, was beaten into fourth,, the ...position: Beau Vite occupied' last y«ar; but Pandsct had an interest for the Dominion,, as his dam is a New Zealand ms-re by Paper Money.

Pandect was bred and is owned by Mr. John Wreii, of Melbourne, who also owns the t)ominu>n-bred Wilson, third in last year's A.J.C. Derby. Last season as a two-year-old he was sparingly raced, and his win came at the fifth of his seven outings,-in the V.R.C.: Qibson Carmichael Stakes, 7 furlongs, on Australian Cup ..Day,- a .race .that was also won by Wilson the previous year. Taken from, there to Sydney he finished second to Lucrative in the A.J.C. Sires' Produce Stakes, 7 furlongs, and was fourth'in the Cham-, pagne Stakes, won by John from Lucrative. This ; seaspn he appears the master of Lucrative.' - Pandect was prepared, till this season by A j ax's trainer, F. •Musgraye, but on being transferred to Sydney for the spring campaign there he temporarily entered F. McGrath's stable, which also shelters Beau Vite. He made his reappearance in the Chelmsford Stakes at Tattersall's Meeting and ran an excellent third to Beaulivre and High Caste, only half a length and a head respectively back. At his next appearance a I week later he finished second to. Tidal Wave in the Rosehill Guineas, beaten 'half a length, and that was his finai outing .prior .to the Derby. In the Rosehill Guineas Lucrative was. third, so that Pandect has twice turned tables this season on his autumn victor. Pandect is a bay colt-by the Tracery horse Pantheon (who ran second in tHe Melbourne Cup, unlucky to be beaten), the sire also of' Peter Pan (A J.C. Derby and two Melbourne Cups), Avenger. (A. J.C. Derby), Feminist (A.J.C. Metropolitan), Maikai- (Perth Cup, Williamstown Cup, and second in both Caulfieldand Melbourne Cups), and Olympian, Panto, Hyperion, and Oceanus (all winners of the iW.A.T.C. Derby). He is the third son of Pantheon to win the A.J.C. Derby, but strangely none of the Pantheons has yet won: the V.R.C.. Derby, Peter Pan not having been nominated for that classic and Avenger being beaten into third place. , The-dam of Pandect is Credit, who was by Paper Money out of Killena, by Kilbroney out of Ena, by Royal Artillery (son of Hotshkiss) out of imported Stressa, by Orvieto (.son of Bend Or). Credit was Killena's 1925 foal and, sent over to the Sydney Easter sales In .192? by the Elderslie Stud, she was purchased on behalx o£ Mr. Wren for 625 guineas. Her race career was inconspicuous, as she ran three times at two years and three times at five years without eufrcess. She was a full-sister to Rerepai, a

good open sprinter, and also to State Bank and Chips, useful sorts, as well as a . half-sister to : Kilfane (Riverton Cup, etc.), Stream, Lucy Locket,. and Bonena. .*•-■■

Killena was the best filly of her year in the Dominion. She won the C.J.C. Irwell Handicap, beating Sasanoff, Koesian, and eight others, ran second in the Middle Park Plate, beating The Toff and Nones, and then won the C.J.C. Autumn Nursery, beating Cease Fire, The Toff, Wardancer, and others in lmin 13 S-ssecfor the.six furlongs. She struck a tendon and could not afterwards be thoroughly trained, but notwithstanding she ran second to Devotion .in the following season's Oaks. , She was.retired by Mr. I. G. Duncan immediately afterwards and she produced her first foal, Kilfane, the next spring.
