COLD AND SQUALLY

IMPROVING TOMORROW

Special forecast for Wellington:—

Strong southerly winds, decreasing gradually tomorrow. Weather cold, squally, and changeable at first with passing showers, but a considerable improvement likely tomorrow..

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole is for winds from a southerly quarter prevailing. Winds will be strong at first, reaching gale force at times, between East Cape and Banks- Peninsula and in the South Taranaki Bight; elsewhere they will be moderate to strong, but will decrease tomorrow. On the west coast, of the South Island the weather will be fine, but elsewhere it will be cloudy, with passing showers in the North Island and with occasional showers east of the Southern Alps. Conditions, ■however, will improve from the west and south. Temperatures will be cold, with snow showers in the ranges and with sharp frosts in the southern half of the South Island. The cyclonic disturbance has moved from the Tasman Sea on to the North Island, while a new deep centre has developed near the Chatham Islands. Moderate to strong southerly winds were blowing yesterday from Cook Strait southward, with fresh to strong northerlies to westerlies elsewhere. Southerlies, however, had advanced by this morning to beyond Taranaki and Hawke's Bay and in places had increased to gale force. In central districts the weather has been unsettled with intermittent rain, and there have been, some heavy falls, Ruatona topping the list with 438 points. In other districts there have been passing showers, but an improvement was in evidence this morning. Temperatures have been moderate in the north, but otherwise they have been cold. All four main centres had dull weather yesterday with intermittent rain, Auckland having a thunderstorm in the afternoon. A moderate to fresn northerly blew in Auckland, the other centres having light to moderate southWellington's rainfall totalled 59 points, and temperatures ranged between 52.1 and 43.3 degrees.
