September in Wellington was remarkable for the mild which were experienced and . £Ol the relative, absence of wind. The sunshine was slightly below and the rainfall above the average. The month's mean maximum and minimum temperatures as recorded at Kelburn were 57.1 and 46.1 degrees, being 1.4 and 1.6 degrees respectively above the average. The month s approximate mean temperature was 51.b degrees, or 1.5 degrees above the September average of 50.1 degrees. The average temperature at 9 a.m. was 52.4 decrees, or two degrees above normal. These are the warmest September temperatures recorded at Kelburn since records began there in 1928. The mean grass temperature was 43.2 degrees, no less than 3.2 degrees above normal, making the highest grass mean since 1917 when, at Thorndon, the figure was 43.6 degrees. The lowest grass temperature was one of 33 degrees, on the 22nd. There were no frosts at Kelburn, but.there was one in the Hutt Valley on the 12th. The highest temperature reached during the month was 63.7 degrees on the 25th The daily run of wind averaged only 173 miles, whereas 233 miles a day is the average figure for September. This is the lowest figure since 1903, when the daily run averaged 151 miles. There was only one gale, a north-westerly of brief duration on the 30th.
The hours of bright sunshine totalled 155, 8.3 hours less than normal. This works out at an average of 5.2 hours a day;-or- 44 per cent, of the possible. There were four days without any sunshine at all. The month's rainfall was 4.15 inches, almost one inch more than normal. Rain fell on 15 days, the heaviest fall being 1.44 inches on the 10th.
