SPINNING WHEEL DEVISED
Tl*e recent request made to the woirten of New Zealand to extend their patriotic work to home spinning in view of the Dominion-wide knitting wool, shortage was actively taken up by tl?se women's section of the National Servilce Movement, which promptlyinstitutied a spinning circle in .its organisation!, states the "New Zealand Herald."
Resjearch, investigation, and experiment ' have been, carried out with the result: that a practical wheel has been devised which can be made locally at an ectbnomical price. All types of purebred and crossbred fleece have been tested and dyeing experiments with locally available materials were conducted- The 'article produced has' been proved, entirely serviceable. The-coun-try was combed for "expert teachers in the crcfcft and the spinning circle now has th c voluntary Services of six -expert instructors for Auckland city and for demonstrations in thersurrounding districtts.
With the favourable wool season approaching, the organisation , hopes to achieve (practical "working1 circles in" the near future in its clubroomsiand other suitable premises. Its aim is' to have hundredb of voluntary spinners working in 3t»elays, so that the result will be the \£rork of 100 workers labouring a full-tilme week. It is anticipated that the:pe will be no difficulty in getting unlJlmited numbers of workers.
The organisation is at present making a drive for funds in Auckland for the purchase1 of equipment for the spinning project. "'_.,
