MR. ERNEST BARNS
(Special to the Post.")
WANGANUI, August 28
By the death of Mr. Ernest Barns at Auckland early this week, New Zealand has lost one of its most learned students of the Maori race. Living at Wanganui from boyhood, Mr. Barns early became proficient in the Native tongue, and acted as a Native interpreter, as well as clerk of the Wanganui County Council and of several road boards. He was also agent for the Public Trustee. He lived for several years in Taranaki, also as representative of the Public Trustee and as Native interpreter, and retired about 12 years ago. For the past year Mr. Barns has lived at Rotoiti. Mr. Barns was an old member of the Wanganui Museum Board of Trustees. His knowledge has been of inestimable value, and his loss will be felt severely. He was buried at the old Putiki Cemetery, where his father was also laid to rest, and representatives of both European and Native races were present- The Rev. P. H. Leonard, of Marton, an old friend, officiated at the service in the Putiki Memorial Church and at the \ graveside.
