NEW ZEALAND INSTITUTE

The annual meeting of the National Council of the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs was held recently. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, the Hon. W. Barnard; vice-presi-dents, the Hon.W. Nash (Wellington), the Hon. W. Downie Stewart (Dunedin), Mr. P. Martin Smith (Auckland), Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland (Christchurch); hon. secretary-treasurer, Mr. G. R. Powles; research secretary, Dr.. H. Belshaw; assistant research secretary, Professor F. L.-W. Wood; hon. auditor, Mr. T. R. Smith. Mr. B. R. Turner, was appointed acting secretary for three months during the absence' of the secretary on military duties.

The resignation of Mr. Justice Smith as a member of the council was, accepted with regret. .

The research activities of the institute were fully reviewed by.the council, reference being made particularly to a forthcoming publication entitled "The Maori People Today."

Resolutions were passed expressing the council's appreciation of the assistance and support received from the New Zealand Council for Educational Research, the International Research

Council of the Institute 'of Pacific Relations, and the editor, Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland. Other matters considered included the arrangements made by the institute for a quarterly newsletter service, in the form of a commentary (~i the course of events and trend of opinion in New Zealand in relation to the war.
