MAGISTRATE'S COURT

One month's imprisonment with hard labour was the sentence imposed by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday upon Francis John Reynolds, aged 57, a piano tuner, who pleaded guilty to and blamed drink for his theft of a pair of slippers, valued at 2s lid, from outside the shop of Austin Bennett, Ltd., in Cuba Street. Sub-Inspector L. R. Capp said Reynolds had a formidable list of previous convictions.

Matthew Boyd, aged 73, pleaded guilty to a charge of being an idle and disorderly person with insufficient lawful means of support, and was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment. SubInspector Capp said that on a recent Sunday Boyd had thrown himself in front of a moving car on the Hutt Road* at 4 a.m., and after being discharged from hospital, where he was treated for a hand injury he received, he threw himself in front of another car at about 8 p.m. the same day, this time without being hurt.

John. Stanley Percival Collings, aged 17, a machinist, was fined £2 for assaulting ' William Donnelly, aged 15, with whom the police said Collings tried to pick a quarrel in Newtown Park one night. Collings pleaded guilty.

Petronella Ebert, a married woman, pleaded ignorance of the law when charged with failing to register under the Aliens Control Emergency Regulations. The Magistrate said there might have been some misunderstanding and ordered her to pay costs.

A remand until "August 8 was granted in the case of Clarence Sigurd Pearson, aged 21, a labourer, who is charged with stealing a kit of motor tools valued at £2 15s from K. F. Hodson. Bail was allowed.

A further remand until August 23 was granted in the case of Robert Merritt Crabb, aged 25, who is charged with deserting from the motor-ship South Africa at Dunedin in August, 1938, and with unlawfully landing in New Zealand. Bail was renewed.
