SPORTS CENTRE

WELLINGTON PROPOSAL

LIKELY TO BE REVIVED

Reference'to the proposal to establish a sports headquarters in Wellington was made by Mr. Albert Cohen, chairman of the Wellington Billiards Association, when speaking at a function held at' the Federal Club in honour of the winning team and other competitors at the recent Wellington inter-club billiards tournament.

Mr. Cohen said that the Billiards Association was very fortunate in always having a meeting-room, this being due to the generosity of the Federal Club. Unfortunately, however, there were other sports bodies which were not so happily placed. For this and other reasons the proposal to have a sports headquarters, which had been taken up some" time ago, had much to commend it. Since preliminary consideration of the scheme, war had broken out and the proposal had been left in abeyance. Mr. A. C. "Kitto, president of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre, who was primarily responsible for the proposal, was keen, however, to see it proceeded with, arid he had stated recently that the intention was to revive the project if possible.

The idea, said Mr. Cohen, was not only to provide adequate accommodation for the various sports bodies to hold their meetings, but also to provide club facilities for sports competitors. Mr. Cohen said he hoped that the project would be taken up enthusiastically and said that as chairman of the Wellington Billiards Association it was his intention to give it his wholehearted support. He expressed the hope also that other sports officials would follow suit.
