SYDNEY RACING

CURTAILMENT ADVOCATED

(From "Vedette.")

SYDNEY, July 26,

Efforts are being made again by the State Cabinet to persuade representatives of racing clubs in Sydney to agree to a voluntary reduction in racing, but so far no progress is reported. Failing this, legislation will be introduced when the House meets early next month.

It is understood that the proprietary clubs are working hard to organise opposition, but the members of the sub-committee, set up by Cabinet consider that they will be able to force through the necessary Bill to curtail racing up to 50 per cent. Disinterested observers agree that there is too much racing in and around Sydney and consider that a weeding-out of the small meetings would be an advantage and would be a benefit economically and a help to country racing, where the poorer class horses could be employed with advantage. High Caste is commencing to sprint in good style at Randwick and looks bigger and brighter than ever. He will be a fit horse for the early, spring meetings, and ready for his old rival Reading, who also is doing satisfactorily in his early preparation. ' Beaulivre has not been asked for any serious tasks since his return from his Doomben Cup success in Brisbane. G. Price has kept him to light work, and Beaupartir also has been restricted to similar training. Similarly favourable reports are to hand from Melbourne concerning A] ax, who is commencing to stride along. He had his first real gallop this week, bowling over five furlongs in lmin 3£ sec.

Yours Truly was given his first race at Canterbury last Saturday since resuming work. He looked burly but was able to force the pace for nearly a mile in a ninerfurlong event and then finished fifth. He carried top weight, 9.0, so did not shape badly. Gladynev has many people in Melbourn* all agog, mostly on account of his luxury weight in the Caulfield Cup. Probably they would not be so enthusiastic if they saw this ordinary-looking little bay horse at Randwick. So far, J. T. Jamieson. has taken him very quietly, but probably Gladynev is more forward than he appears. He is absolute favourite for the Caulfield event, but due only to early sp.eckers, for there has not been one penny of stable money invested on him. Mention of the Caulfield Cup recalls that there is no certainty whether the race will be run at Caulfield. Since the outbreak of war the V.A.T.C.'s course has been a recruiting depot and meetings have been held at Flemington since last February. Now that recruiting has ceased for the time being, the club hopes to have its course returned in the near future, and that it will be available for the major meetings of the spring at least. Mr. W. Devon won another race with Lucullus Lad on Wednesday at Victoria Park. He was one of the first away, was in front at the- turn, and stayed there. Mr. Devon was not overpleased with the short price on offer about his horse, or the fact that his two-year-old O Raklo also was a hot favourite. O Raklo had every chance and was well beaten.
