TROTTING

MAH JONG IN SOUTH

JOINS J. BRYCE'S STABLE

(By "Ariki Toa.")

The well-bred and. successful Auck- | land trotter Mah Jong has had a j change of stables, and she is now being trained at Hornby by J. Bryce. For the past two seasons she has been prepared by the Mangere trainer J. T. Paul, who has succeeded in educating | her into one of the best unhoppled performers in the north. She has not been out of the money in any of her eight starts this term, and has registered three firsts, two seconds, and two thirds. Mah Jong is a roan mare by the imported stallion Maxegin from the Nelson Bingen mare Katute, -winner of the New Zealand Trotting Stakes in 1926. Her dam Muricata was a most successful matron, and at the stud she has produced Taraire (4.26 1-5), Ahuriri (4.20 and winner of two New Zealand Trotting Cups), Little Claire (3.27 4-5), and Katute (3.27 4-5). Death of Trenand. The New Zealand-bred pacer Trenand died recently in Australia at the age of 22 years. He had taken a twomile record of 4min 29 2-ssec and was a most consistent <, but unlucky pacer when trained by O. E. Hooper. Trenand was by Brent Locanda from Tairene, the dam of Lucky Jack, Dundas.Boy, and Dundee, all of whom were bred by Mr. W. T. Lowe. Working Well. According to a northern report the Wrack gelding Ironside is showing a new lease of life in his training at Takanini, and in a recent workout with Josedale Grattan he finished too well for the American-bred horse over the last half-mile. Ironside has not raced for some time, and he may be all the better for a race, but it will be surprising if he does not pay expenses on the Addington trip. Successful Year. The Auckland Trotting Club has had a very successful year, and the totalisator investments, £'498,127, were a record for any one season, and represented an increase of £34,581 on the 1938----39 total. The loss of the 1 per cent, rebate of totalisator duty cost the club £4981. . U. Scott's Progress. The American horse U. Scott has been getting through plenty of solid work recently, and although.he has not faced for over twelve months he is not likely to'lack on the score of physical fitness when he is produced at the New Zealand Metropolitan .Trotting Club's Meeting, which opens at Addington next week. His injured hoof has responded well to treatment, and hopes, are held that the Scotland horse will stand up to his training in the approved style. Now in Australia. Reporter, who won a number of races when trained at Methven by T. H. McGirr, is now in Australia, and according to reports he was to be put into work when the last mail left. Reporter was foaled in 1928, and while he won several races over two miles, he was at his best in sprint races and had a mile record of 2min 8 3-ssec. A fine Record. The Wrack gelding Stormtost has been getting through serviceable work recently with a view to racing at Addington next week, and he has acquitted himself well. With a record of five wins in six starts last term a good deal of interest will centre in his displays, and he may prove worth following throughout the carnival. Am Improver. | Of the maiden pacers who raced at Washdyke the- best impression was created by Lady Denise, who struck .serious interference in the running and theri got to within a length of Irish Dusk. Lady Denise has taken some | time to fulfil early expectations, but now that she is beginning to show direct improvement she is not likely to be long in the maiden . classes. Well Bred. F. C. Dunlevey has leased si three-year-old filly that on breeding should be a champion. She is by the imported horse Gallant Knight from Worthy Queen (2.3), holder of the mile record for trotters in-New Zealand and Aus-. tralia. Worthy Queen is a daughter of Worthy Bingen (brother to Great Bin-, gen and Peter Bingen) from Queen Chimes, winner of the Taranaki Futurity Stakes.
