DAY IN PARLIAMENT
DEBATE ON BROADCASTING
Another full day was spent in the House of Representatives yesterday, when, in addition to passing two Bills dealing with war pensions, members staged a full-dress debate on the Broadcasting Vote and annual report, which made its appearance in the House during the afternoon. Discussion on the War Pensions Bills was notable for the general commendation expressed on the purposes for which the measures were introduced. The debate on the broadcasting accounts followed fairly well-defined lines with the Opposition making its annual protest against the amount of the licence fee and also having something to say about the use of the broadcasting services for Government propaganda.
In the evening two more Bills were introduced and read a first time, one being of considerable importance to insurance companies and the other dealing with minor amendments to the Rural Housing Act.
Before the House adjourned at 11.15 p.m., after the Prinie Minister had found it necessary to apply the closure to the broadcasting debate, Mr. Fraser indicated that the House would adjourn for three weeks as from tonight, subject to being called together beforehand should circumstances warrant it.
