INTERCESSORY SERVICE

Both sessions of today's intercessory service in the Town Hall were well attended by citizens of all walks of life. The Rev. A. W. Armstrong presided over the first half-hour, the second being conducted by Canon Davies, who spoke briefly on "Has Christianity Failed?" The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, read the Scriptures, and Mr. C. Collins was at the organ. A number of representative laymen and ministers were on the platform.

The prompt arrival of three fire engines from the Central Station and another from Thorndon prevented a serious blaze when fire broke out in the varnish room of G. H. Jackson and Co., Ltd., paint and varnish manufacturers, 21 Wingfield Street, at about 5 o'clock last night. A large quantity of varnish was destroyed before the flames were extinguished with foam apparatus, but the walls of the room, being of concrete, suffered no damage.
