PRISONERS' FAMILIES

"Arrangements have been completed under which the Social Security Department has taken over the provision of benefits for the, dependants of prisoners," said the Minister in Charge of Prisons (the Hon. D. G. McMillan), in an interview. "In the past this was done by the Prisons Department, but it is felt that this work can be done more expeditiously and satisfactorily by the Social Security Department, which has offices in all parts of the Dominion.

"Dependants of prisoners should therefore apply direct to the local office of the Social Security Department for guidance in making application. As Minister in Charge of Prisons I will continue to have, of course, a direct interest in the welfare of prisoners' dependants and will take an active interest in the working of the new scheme, which will make for less hardship on innocent people than has existed in the past."
