PARTY FEELING SUNK

Party feeling was sunk by the Labour-controlled Christchurch City Council on Monday evening when, on the nomination of the Mayor (Mr. R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.), Mrs! W. Mackay was appointed a city representative on j the North Canterbury Hospital Board !to replace Dr. P. S. Foster, a Citizens' I Association member of the board, who resigned consequent on accepting a post in the board's employ, states the "Star-Sun." Mrs, Mackay, vho , was previously a member of the board, i contested the last hospital board election as a Citizens' Association candidate, and topped the unsuccessful candidates. Councillor J. S. Barnett secj onded Mrs. Mackay's nomination, and i Councillor M. E. Lyons, on behalf of the Citizens' Association, thanked the Mayor and Councillor Barnett for their words of appreciation of Mrs. Mackay's past services, and for the manner in which party feeling had been sunk. The Mayor* said that at a previous meeting of the council he nad stated that, owing to a past action of the council, he would never support any Citizens' Association nominee for any future local body vacancies. However, now the position had to be considered from the point of view of the'war.-He had expressed the .opinion that during the war there should be complete I unity. Mrs. Mackay had been nexfc jon the list at the board election and iin conformity with the spirit of unity ! and democracy she was entitled to the | nomination. The Wellington City Council had caused considerable discussion in Wellington when it took action ; against Labour nominees who were ! next on the' list at elections, 'it per- | sonally he did not think such a practice should be adopted at "the present time.
