FARMERS' RETURNS

PLEA FOR REDUCTION

During consideration of the Estimates of the Department of Agriculture in the House of Representatives yesterday, the suggestion was made by the Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. Adam Hamilton) that the number of returns farmers were asked to make could be reduced if there was greater collaboration between various Departments of State.

Mr. Hamilton referred to a paper he had seen recently relating to % petrol usage on farms, and stated that it m*ist have contained the best part of 100 (questions. He was sure that the information sought could have been obtained from other returns that had been j supplied previously. The filling in of all the returns that were required was a source of worry to the farmer, who found it more difficult to do than the business man, who had his books and other data more readily at hand. . Replying, the Minister of Lands (the Hon. F. Langstone) said he quite agreed that it was annoying and very aggravating to have to fill in a whole lot of returns. It was necessary for the country to have a proper stocktaking, but he thought it should be minimised. If the Leader of the Opposition would let him have the form he had referred to he would see what could be done.
