PRESS AND 8.8.C.
CHARGES OF PREFERENCE
COMMONS DEBATE
(By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright.)
(Received July 18, 1.30 p.m.)
LONDON, July 17
In the House of Commons Mr. Duff Cooper, Minister of Inrormation, replying to criticism of the preference shown to the 8.8.C. compared with the Press regarding the issue of official news, said that the Duke of Windsor's \ appointment was ' announced at 10.55 p.m. and was included in the 8.8.C. bulletin at 11 p.m. The censorship ban on cabling was not withdrawn owing to a mistake. The 8.8.C. was not subject to the same censorship as the Press, but 90 per cent, of the 8.8.C.'s official news came from news agencies. Sir Archibald Southby asked whether Mr. Duff Cooper was aware that the Press had a full account of the Arandora Star ..sinking at 1 p.m. on July 3, but the decision to allow publication was delayed till too late. As a result the 8.8.C. news at 11 p.m. was the first intimation the public had of what had happened.
Mr. Duff Cooper promised to investigate the case.
Replying to Sir Percy Hurd's suggestion that the Press create its own representative council of advice and discipline, Mr. Duff Cooper said that if the Press desired to advance any such proposals he would receive them sympathetically.
