PLUS THE SALES TAX
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Qn going to buy my tobacco today I find that it is increased in price by l£d per tin, that is, Is per lb, as a result of the increase in sales tax. I am- told, however, that the Government will only obtain an extra B^d per lb through the increase of 5 per cent, in this tax. We have been warned that we will shortly be called upon to pay Is in each £ of wages earned, as a contribution, which I gladly pay, to help win the war, tout why should we workers be burdened in our cost of living with nearly 4d per lb of tobacco, which is apparently not finding its way into the war effort? Is this typical of the sales tax increases we can expect, when we were told that all increases due to the sales tax would be direct contributions to the war fund? The Price Tribunal should take notice.—l am, etc., WORKER. |
