ATHLETIC AND MARIST
Play in the Athletic-Marlst Brothers Old Boys match at Hataitai was, as in other matches, greatly influenced by the wintry conditions. Handling of the greasy ball was difficult, but Athletic at times attempted to open up the play. Marist were content to have the ball at toe. The backs came into the picture, however, with some telling line-kicking on defence, especially by Brown, Callanan, and Thomas. Thomas, at full-back for Marist, was on final leave from Ngaruawahia and playing his last game of the season. He acted as Marist's captain, and was right on his game. Although somewhat lucky in scoring their try, Marist would have been unfortunate to lose on the run of the play, which waa in favour of Athletic during the first spell with the position reversed after the change-over. Rice, playing behind the Athletic scrum, made a good showing, as did his opposite, Brown. Rice kicked a penalty goal for Athletic in the first half, and Callanan was awarded a try for Marist half-way through the second spell. Result: Athletic 3, Marist Brothers 0.8. 3. The referee was Mr. D. G. Kelly.
