I.2B—Stewards' Handicap, £450; 6 furlongs.
• 220-Amigo. One of the best sprinters in winter going in the Dominion, and although he has a big weight he is equal to carrying it. Won race last year , 10 6 312-Black Thread. Built up fine record over sprint distances at Easter, and a proved performer on the Trentham track 10 6 121-Aero King. Secured two firsts and a second at Ellerslie last month, but appears to have his full share of weight now 9 ( 12 (Nil) -Catalogue. Will be making a reappearance after a spell since the spring. Distance will probably be too short for him 9 12 000-Majority. Won at the corresponding meeting last year under the steadier * of 10.2, but has failed in recent starts 912 020-Rebel Mate. In the money in heavy going at Dunedin last month, and a previous winner at Trentham 9 9 O-Mittie. Unplaced over middle distance at Otaki, but the race should prove beneficial. Has won up to a mile on the course " • 000-0 rate. Recent form has not been good, but on his best behaviour Is equal to surprising 9 6 00-Sly Fox. Will contest the Whyte Handicap ;••• 9 4 D2l -Lord Cavendish. Has shown marked improvement lately, but hitherto has not appreciated heavy going ... 8 12 (Nil) -Lady Montana. Would probably go better over a longer distance 8 10 1310-Grey Honour. Failed at Ashburton, but a speedy sort over sprint distances 8 10 '001-Brazilian. At last start dead-heated with Aero King over six furlongs at Ellerslie at a difference of 211b 8 6 10-Blonde Princess. A smart performer up to a mile, and twice successful at Trentham in last twelve months. Has _ developed appreciably since last seen 8 o 0-White Raiah. May be better after another race or two 8 & 000-Skyrena. Speedy but may not be up to this class 8 4 211-Vascones. Made successful debut in open company at Hastings last month. A much-improved filly 8 4 031-Paper Note. Partial to heavy going, and an easy winner over seven furlongs at Dunedin last month 8 3 201-Heroic Maid. A speedy filly, but may be troubled in this class. A winner at Hastings on Saturday .. 8 0 000-Screen Star. Does not appeal in this company •• •• 8 ° The favourites have had a preponderance of wins in the Stewards' Handicap, seven out of the last dozen winners having been the public
elect, but the issue looks more tricky than usual this year. Amigo is well enough to make a bold bid to win again, but some of the lighter-weights promise to worry him, particularly Blonde Princess, Brazilian, Vascones, and Paper Note, all of whom go well in the mud. Others in form are Aero King, Black Thread, Rebel Mate, Grey Honour, and Lord Cavendish, and Mittie and Majority have always to be respected on the Trentham track. There is scope for wide choice, and among those who may justify their backing are BLONDE PRINCESS, AMIGO, and BRAZILIAN.
