PETROL AND WORK

Sir, —Certain measures brought into operation, as well as others which may come later, do not appear remarkable for their clearness of thought. Particularly does this apply to those meassures relating to benzine restrictions. Last month, at the time of registration, we were allowed one gallon more per month than formerly; but when all the fees are paid we are wdrse off than we were before. The Minister of Finance now hints that ultimately private cars may be taken off the roads altogether. Would that not be killing the goose that lays the golden eggs? Apart from the loss of taxes, Mr. Nash apparently does not think of the many thousands of men such a measure would instantly throw out of work. How would this advance us—or help us'win the war? —I am, etc.,
