VISITORS ON SCENE

TRENTHAM GALLOPS

SCHOOL BY CLARION CALL

(By "Rarigatira.")

With the first of the visiting horses on hand, there was more interest in the work at Trentham this morning in preparation for the Wellington Winter Meeting next week. Very little fast galloping was done, but there was some schooling over both the country and the hurdles.

Since last week the tracks have taken on a different aspect, as the rain in the Valley over the weekend and each night since has rendered them soft and there is now practically no chance of their being anything except heavy ■ for the meeting. The trial grass this morning was greasy, and the. course proper, where the schooling over country was done, was being broken into several inches by the hooves of the horses using it.

Clarion Call (A. Jenkins) was sent over nine fences of the country, missing the sod wall on the first round, and he cleared every obstacle perfectly. There is little question about his negotiating the country next week, but in the past he has always laboured under pressure in heavy ground.

British Isles (A. Curran) jumped the five fences of the country along the back without mistake, being taken to each obstacle carefully. He is a very big horse and looks well.

Midland (Curran) was sent over four of the schooling hurdles, and except that he hit the first his exhibition was clean. He and British Isles have been brought to the meeting by Curran, who will ride them both.

Kincora (Jenkins) also jumped the four schooling hurdles soundly, rapping some of them but making no mistakes. • He will be ridden next week by P. L. Jarvis.

Good Sun (L. T. Nesbitt) gave a faultless display over four hurdles, .his jumping being the best he has done for some time. No rider is yet definite for him next week.

Jewelled Girdle, who is a very fit horse, was given pacing only, as were Gold Spot and Hot Box. Gold Spot, a maiden gelding by The Ace, accompanied Jewelled Girdle as a mate cm the trip, and he might be given a race in one of the trial events on the later days. Jewelled Girdle will be ridden by H. Maria and Hot Box by R. McTavish.

Sly Fox and Blonde Princess, who arrived last evening, were exercised only. They have obviously each done a solid preparation. Though accepted for both open events- on Tuesday, Sly Fox, is to run in the Whyte Handicap, in which he will probably be ridden by N. R. McKenzie, and Blonde Princess in the Stewards' Handicap^, in which she will be ridden by H. N. Wiggins.

. The galloping on the trial grass was confined to local horses, the majority of whom are not engaged on the first day of the meeting.

St. Grace (Nesbitt) ran half a mile in 53Jsec. Parchment (K. A. Carlyle) came away from Loyal Queen (T. Biggs), at the end of five-furlongs in Imin 12sec, the last, half-mile in 57sec, but they were extended only over,.the final hundred yards.

The Monarch (Biggs) beat Blue Border (Carlyle) by a length, with Taane Pango (F. Boyer) a couple of lengths • back, after traversing half a mile in' 52sec. The Monarch, a Croupier three-year-old in H. B. Lorigan's stable, will probably make his race debut in one of the trial events next week. Buccaneer (Biggs) did a working gallop Over six furlongs.

Liane (Boyer) was clear of Dictate (T Young) throughout six furlongs in lmin 25sec, the last half-mile in 57sec, but there was a big difference in the weights carried. Dictate's, rider in the Whyte Handicap is not yet definite, but A. Jenkins or H. N. Wiggins will probably have the mount. A. Jenkins already has a mount in all four jumping events on Tuesday, his rides being Clarion Call, Hirangi, King Mestor, and Tidewaiter. It is now reported that A. E. Ellis will ride Padishah in the Wellington Steeplechase. P. Burgess has been engaged for Sleeveless and Smoke Screen, W. J. Broughton for Lady Tinkle and Mittie, and G. R. Tattersall for Dv Maurier, Kilometre, and Last Acre. W. E. Pine will be on Love Lilt and High Peer.
