MANY INQUIRIES MADE

CHILDREN FROM ENGLAND

SUGGESTION FROM MAYOR

Though positive steps couid- not be taken regarding the reception of children evacuated from England until the position had been made }/ more clear by the British and Dominion Governments, said the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, today, yet he was very much impressed by the attitude of many Wellington people, who had already made inquiries and stated their willingness to help in any > way they could.

"I am the more certain now," said Mr. Hislop, "that any action proposed to look after these children will he warmly supported by the people of Wellington, and immediately official word is received telling us how the scheme is to be put into operation I shall make known through the Press the nature of the plan to enable citizens to discuss in their homes what they feel that they can do for these children in days of great need for help and sympathy, and, having done so, to advise me of their names and the part they wish to take. ;

"Meanwhile, pending the announcement of details citizens should con-i sider what help they may be able ta give, so that when the call is made^ upon this city to' take its part in a! great humanitarian work they may' reply without delay. That the response will be splendid I do not doubt, for so many inquiries have already been received, but no response can be too great, for the need, too, is great.
