DAY IN PARLIAMENT
IMPREST BILL PASSED
After another colourless day of debate, the House of Representatives last night passed the Imprest Supply Bill, which makes financial provision to the extent of £10,500,000 for running the country's services for the next two months. "That's going some," commented the Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. Adam Hamilton) after doing a little quick multiplication when the 'Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) announced the period of supply. "That's £60,000,000' a year."
Discussion once again centred almost exclusively on the Dominion's war effort, but in spite of the talent that was brought to bear on it argument followed familiar lines. There was a good deal of talk about the need for political unity, but the germ of party recrimination appears to be still alive on both sides and the cause of that desirable objective was not advanced any further.
The House rose at 11.10 p.m. after the Prime Minister had asked for an adjournment until 7.30 p.m. on Thursday next. He said that the Budget would be ready by that time, and that the financial debate would probably start on the following Tuesday. In the meantime members have to hold themselves ready to assemble if occasion requires it.
