OBITUARY

MR. GEORGE W. SLADE

The death occurred at his home in Brooklyn last night of Mr. George William Slade, who was well known for his association with the administration of Rugby football and other activities as well as in his printing business in Wellington. Mr. Slade, who was 57 years of age, had been cbrifined to his bed for nearly a year following an operation.

Mr. Slade was born in Sydney in 1883 and came to New Zealand in 1907. He was in partnership with the Hon. J. McLeod, M.L.C., in a printing business in Taranaki until 1913, when he came to Wellington and started in business on his own account.

A keen follower of Rugby football, Mr. Slade for some years held an important post on the administrative side of the game. He served on the New Zealand Rugby Union's management committee from 1919 to 1922, and was for about three years chairman of that committee. The memorable tour by the Springboks in 1921 was one of the notable events in Rugby history that occurred during his term of office. Mr. Slade was also a trustee of the New Zealand Rugby Union, and for many years he was the Taranaki Rugby Union's resident delegate in Wellington.

Mr. Slade was treasurer of the Wellington Show Association for a number of years and a former vice president of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club. He was also president for some years of the Brooklyn Ratepayers' Association and took a prominent part in schemes for the improvement of the school grounds and other district amenities. His interests also included horticulture and his garden reflected his skill and enthusiasm. Mr, Slade is survived by his wife and son.
