Invitation to Patriotic Effort.
Card enthusiasts were not put off by bad weather and attended the Miramar Central School Parents' \Association evening recently in large numbers. Competitions were won by Mesdames Trend, Hill, Baker, Eyles, Booth, South, and Norris, Messrs. Mollier, Davidson, and Wright. The card conveners were Messrs. Greig and Rob- ' crts, and the hostess, Mrs.. Meachem, was ably assisted by the ladies' com- < mittee. Members and friends were asked to support the . patriotic "500" card evening to be held at the school on Saturday, June 8. "A Time to Work." , Phenomenal growth and abounding energy characterise the Petone branch of the New Zealand Union of Townswomen's Guilds (Inc.), whicfti celebrated its first birthday on a recent afternoon at the Orange Hall, Petone. The president, Mrs. C. G. Noble, welcomed a full hall of members and guests from1 sister guilds, including the Dominion president, Mrs. J. Pow, the Dominion secretary, Mrs. P. H. Kinsj man, and presidents from Eastbouvne, j Miramar, Kilbirnie, and Lyall Bay. Mrs. Noble outlined the work the guild had accomplished and stated that knitted articles for the Forces/ hussife, clothing for refugees, and gifts for soldiers' parcels had all been contributed by the members. Sample garments of clothing made for refugees, especially for children, were shown by Mrs. Pow, who announced that with the help of its branches the Townswomen's Union of Guilds had now ready two large cases to be sent forward through the High Commissioner, London. Pioneering History Discussed. Mrs. Dallard, who presided at a recent meeting of the central branch of I the League of Mothers, held at the Y.W.C.A?, gave a very interesting talk, her subject being "My ImpressionsyOf the Centennial Exhibition," which terminated with a discussion of the old pioneering days. Several . members who were descendants of the pioneers gave instances of interestirtg events. Afternoon tea was served, and songs were sung' by Miss Harris and recitations given by Mrs. Mclntyre. Successful Improvising. During parade drill on Thursday evening of the Newtown Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade the superintendent called the division to silent' attention for one minute as a mark of respect to the memory, of the late Mr. H. S. Glensor, who had .been an ambulance officer attached to the central division. The post of divisional surgeon, recently held by Dr. Stevenson Wright, who is now serving with the New Zealand Forces, has been accepted by his sister, Dr. D. Stevenson Wright. "Improvisation" was the subject of practice drill. Divisional officers announced the "injuries sustained" by a number of "patients." . The use of the regular splints and bandages was prohibited. Much resourcefulness was displayed by the men. Y.W.C.A. Activities. At a meeting of the captains of the Young Women's Christian Association Inter-house Sports Club held on Tuesday evening, the members displayed, great enthusiasm for the activities of the club, interest centring round plans for the forthcoming dance. Invitations will be distributed at the. club next week. Another important topic of discussion was the programme to supplement the weekly basketball tournament. . Activities include drama, discussions, table tennis, crafts, etc. It was hoped to make an early start with the suggested Interhouse Drama Festival in which teams from the various firms would compete. Members expressed a desire for a club tea-hour preceding the basketball and gymnasium period and arrangements were made for its commencement next 1 weeV
