ATHLETICS FINALS

SHIELD TO AUCKLAND

SOME FINE PERFORMANCES

(By TeJegraph—Press Association.>

CHRISTCHURCH, March 25. ■vr -B.the flrst time In the history of the rvew Zealand Universities tournament, Auck;2 n ~n l^ is year won the athletics shield, the finals of which were decided today. Otago gained second place, with 17 points, Canterbury were third with 12 points, and Victoria College fourth with nine. Three university records were broken, but two, the hammer throw and the javelin throw, will' not pass as official, because competitors had the advantage of a following wind. The other record was established by Canterbury in the mile relay. The time of 3min 37 2-ssec lowered the previous record, established by Otago in 1937, by 2 2-ssec. Another outstanding feat was that of M. Smeeton, Auckland University College, »who won the high jump with a height of sft lOin. Though this is l^in below the existing university record, Smeeton is only a junior ,and thus set a junior New Zealand record for the jump.
