MANY ACTIVITIES OF RED

CROSS MEMBERS

A meeting of the Wellington City Sub-Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society (Inc.) was held recently, Mrs. Gi Lark occupying the chair. Mrs. Lark. reported On the garden fete, which had been; most successful from every point of yieHv;, and extended warm1 thanks to ; all those who had helped'by donations or personal assistance to make this function such an outstanding success. A letter was received from the secretary of the Women's Voluntary Aid Detachment stating that the Collins Cup competition would take place in Wellington and that arrangements were complete for the entertainment of the teams coming from various parts of New Zealand.

. The Bed Cross Sisters reported that the numbers patronising the creche at the Exhibition had kept up to expectations. The number of children who had been admitted and discharged from the creche to the end of February was 1859. Instruction in first aid, home nursing, and hygiene was being carried out in both senior and junior divisions and the students in all subjects were showing keen enthusiasm for this work."

The Junior Red Cross report indicated that the circles in and around Wellington were carrying out very fine programmes of service to1 others.

The ■president of the Ladies' Social Club reported that members had undertaken the catering in connection with the recent Red Cross Conference which they had carried through in a most successful manner. Members had also given valuable assistance to the garden fete by conducting three stalls.

Theconvener of the blind committee reported that visits had been paid to a. number of blind people during the month and a number of requests for assistance in various forms attended to. ' •

The Transport Corps commandant reported that members were receiving regular instruction in road trouble running repairs and drill.

A very satisfactory report was received from the ladies' auxiliary, which stated that the auxiliary had been very busy cutting out and making bandages for the Second Echelon. A number of needy families had also been supplied with layettes and clothing.

: The honorary secretary of the cafeteria reported that the work at the cafeteria continued to be much appreciated by the outpatients. During the month the members had served 1105 cups of tea, coffee, and cocoa..

A report from the delegate of the Women's '. Voluntary Aid Detachment stated that weekly visits had been paid to the Central Park Hospital and Victoria Ward when gifts had been distributed; members had attended the Red Cross Home and Victoria Ward regularly; members continue to give assistance at the Red Cross Creche at the Exhibition; a number of members had sewn up peggy squares into quilts for the Finnish refugees; a large number of members had given very valuable assistance at the garden fete by conducting the afternoon tea; members gave practical demonstrations at the Exhibition; and a number of members had staffed a stand for the recent cancer campaign appeal.

Very good work had been done on behalf. of. the Finnish refugees, a further seven cases of children's new and second-hand clothing had been handed over to headquarters to be forwarded overseas.
