HERE AND THERE

Ellerslie Races. Although overcast, with an occasional hint of rain, warm autumn weather with an entire absence of wind made delightful conditions at the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club's Autumn Meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday. The frdcking, as is usual at this season of the year, was strictly tailored, the majority of women choosing suits and ensembles in the new autumn tonings; Among the many visitors from all parts of New Zealand were Mrs. T. H. Lowry (Hawke's Bay), Mrs. J G. Coates (Kaipara), Mrs. McKenzie (Dunedin); Mrs. F. McGovern, Mrs. T. ;Fancourt (Christchurch), Mrs. Bray and Miss Doris Bray (Wellington), Lady Davis, Mrs. Noel Airey, and Mrs. J. H.-Frater (Auckland), Mrs. Desmond Williams and Mrs. Miles Otway (Te Awamutu). Lyceum Club's Appreciation. At the executive meeting of the Lyceum Club, members stood for a minute^s silence in memory and appreciation of Madame de Mauny's work, help, and encouragement as leader of the "Glee Singers' Circle" for the past five years. The club, it was stated, sustained a great loss. Reminiscences, The first meeting of the year of the Upper Hutt branch of the League of Mothers took the form of a "reminiscence afternoon," past events being recalled by several of the older members and proving very interesting. One of the members still resides over an unbridged river and journeys regularly to meetings on horseback through the river, which is no mean feat for a woman of her age. The speakers were thanked, and presented with posies. Old chorus songs were sung by the choir and songs by Mrs. Fortune: Mrs. Watt announced that a verse-speaking choir was being formed, and Mrs. Castle, president, when welcoming the members, recited a charming poem and an incident of early pioneering in Australia. Afternoon tea was served at the conclusion of the meeting. A.N.A. Club's Easter Dance. Last Saturday's dance at the A.N.A. Club was a particularly pleasant one, although the attendance was much smaller than Usual owing to the absence of Trentham men on leave. Those responsible for the arrangements for the evening were Mesdames H. F. O'Leary, E. Puttick, F. H. Whatley, A. B. Smith, F. E. Bailey, M. H. Millar, Douglas White, K. C. Creswell, E. McNeil, J. R. Sandal, O. Eichelbaum, Mr. and Mrs. A. McNaughton, Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Angus, Mr. and Mrs.W. H. Gledhill, Misses Lena van Staveren, Powell, Valmai Richardson, Ray Williamson, Denise Puttick, and Messrs. B. Joyce, J. L. Menzies, and Forbes.
